LaCie 324
A professional's dream monitor
THE 24-INCH LACIE 324 isn't for the everyday consumer. Costing almost $1,000, it has a native 1,920x1,200 resolution, can handle Blu-ray playback with full 1080p and High-Bandwith Content Protection (HDCP) compatibility, and has areasonably fast 6-milisecond pixel response time.
But the 324's video-friendly features give it the edge over other, similar-rize monitors. The 324 has built-in Faroudja DCDi processor for enhanced video playback, and it also has 10-bit gamma correction that calculates color transition with twice the accuracy of a standard 8-bit monitor. The result were impressive: Color gradients of a Blu-ray movie were extremely smooth, and color accuracy was first-rate. Screen movement was jitter-free, and animation looked almost three-dimensional. We watched a standard DVD, too, and the picture quality looked good. In fact, because the 324 covers 92 percent of the NTSC color gamut, it is better than many LCD TVs.
The 324 also fared well with our DisplayMate (www.displaymate.com) tests. Text was clearly legible down to 6.8 points-both for black text on a white background and white text on a black background. Sharpness and geometry were steady across the screen, and colors were accurate and appropriately saturated. We were especially impressed with the monitor's 178-degree viewing angle: The colors and contrast remained strong even when viewed from an extreme left, right, top, or bottom perspective. The only noticeable flaw appeared whenever the screen was completely white. That's when the backlight illumination appeared a bit uneven, giving a slightly darker appearance along the edges than throughout the rest of the screen. -David English
