Based on Intel's new Centrino 2 Platform, the Toshiba 15.4-inch Tecra M10 and 14.1-inch Tecra A10 laptops make it easier to take care of business. Each portable included Intel vPro business-friendly technology, a Webcam that doubles as a business-card reader, an external Serieal ATA/USB 2.0 combo ports, and Sleep-and-Charge USB ports for juicing up smartphones. Both notebooks come with fingerprint reader and spill-resistant keyboards, and they use Toshiba's EasyGuard technology, which protects hard drives from falls. STRONG BATTERY LIFE AND BRIEFCASE-FRIENDLY dimensions make the $949.99 Toshiba Sattelite U405-S4840 a good budget contender-as long as you don't need a performance powerhouse.
The Satelitte U405-S2820 is like a shrunken version of the Satellite A305-S6845 we recently reviewed. Both have the sam attractive, fingerprint-prone finish, as well as the same shimmering media control panel, glossy keyboard,and uncomfortably warm touch pad set flush to the chassis.
At 5.5 pounds, the system was unobtrusive during our long walks, and its 13.3-inch, 1,280x800-resolution display was certainly bright and clear enough to see in even the moodies coffee shop. In addition to the standard selection of ports and slots, the notebook includes 802.11a/b/g Wi-Fi, but no Bluetooth support. You also get a fingerprint reader, a Webcam, and a roomy 250GB hard drive, plus microphone and headphone jacks. (You'll need the latter to compensate for the unit's weak speakers.)
With its low-end 1.83GHz Core 2 Duo TS550 CPU, the U405-S2820 managed just average performance on our productivity and multimedia benchmark tests, though its scores were in line with other budget notebooks we've tested recently. The laptop's miserable score of frames per second at 1,024x768 on F.E.A.R should tell ou everything you need to know about its 3D performance-this machine isn't for games and high-end graphics users. One area the U405-S2820 did excel was battery life: It lasted 2 hours and 20 minutes in our DVD-rundown test.-S.S.
